Thilo Kehrer: Beyond the Pitch, Building Futures Through His Burundi Foundation
From leading AS Monaco on the field to empowering youth in Burundi off it—Thilo Kehrer’s mission goes far deeper than football.
A Leader Whose Impact Extends Beyond Football
Overlooking the scenic views of Monaco, Thilo Kehrer spoke with openness and purpose, revealing a side of himself that goes far beyond his defensive work for AS Monaco. Since launching his foundation in Burundi in 2022, Kehrer has committed himself to a mission of creating opportunities for children and adolescents through sport, culture, technology, and education.
“My idea was never just to donate or place resources there,” Kehrer explained. “The philosophy is to help people help themselves—with their energy, with their talent, so they can continue growing.”
Born to a Burundian mother, Kehrer spent his first years in Burundi before relocating to Germany, where he eventually rose through the football ranks. Despite his early departure due to regional conflict, his connection to his mother’s homeland has only intensified as he matured.
“Actually, I feel even more connected today than I did when I was younger,” he said. “Returning through the foundation has deepened that relationship massively.”
Building Space, Culture, and Opportunity in Burundi
The central project of the Kehrer Foundation is a multi-functional community space—built next to a school—that provides access to resources often unavailable in local communities. Inside, children can find:
- A traditional library
- A digital library with computers and internet
- Dance classes
- Cooking courses
- Cultural instruction in Burundi’s iconic drum tradition
- And yes—an actual youth football academy
Each program isn’t simply recreational—it’s developmental.
“The kids are energetic, expressive, and hungry to learn,” Kehrer shared with a smile. “They prepared whole dances and ceremonies when I visited… and of course, I had to dance with them!”
One of the most heartwarming moments of the interview came when Kehrer was surprised with a portrait of himself—created entirely out of Burundian coffee—by a young Burundian artist named Clark Briel.
“Nobody would think this is made of coffee,” Kehrer said in amazement. “It shows you can take anything and create something from it.”
Support, Inspiration, and a Vision Forward
The foundation’s first official gala was held in May, attended by figures such as Kylian Mbappé, Leroy Sané, teammates, coaches, and former colleagues across Kehrer’s career. The support from his footballing peers—and the deeply emotional engagement from the Monaco community—makes Kehrer feel backed in both missions: as a player and as a humanitarian.
When asked about the future of the foundation, Kehrer answered with a hopeful smile:
“Terimbere—to move forward, to progress. That’s what we want: more projects, more involvement, more talent discovered.”
At just 29 years old, Thilo Kehrer stands not only as a stalwart defender for AS Monaco, but as a driving force of generational change—proof that legacy is measured not only by trophies, but by the lives uplifted along the way.
